East Vancouver - With 160 days until May 17th, the Vancouver Hastings Green Party marked its line in the sand tonight by confirming Paralympic athlete Ian Gregson as their candidate for the 2005 provincial election.

Gregson, who ran in 2001 and gained 15% of the vote, stated that "this will be a landmark election for the Greens, doing well in 2005 will show the voters we are a permanent fixture on the BC political scene".

Gregson is looking forward to debating with the successor to Joy MacPhail. "In 2001 I was at an obvious disadvantage to MacPhail, however in 2005 my experience will be on par with the candidates from the NDP and Liberals".

Gregson cites his work with the Citizens Assembly for Electoral Reform, as a CUPE union activist and federal Green party organiser over the last four years in preparation to be the MLA for Vancouver Hastings. "I have dedicated myself to becoming more familiar with the process of government over the last four years".

Gregson has gained endorsements from prominent community members including Dr Eldon Yellowhorn, BC's leading First Nations Archaeologist. Dr. Yellowhorn recently played a major role in repatriating ancient remains back to the Haida nation. Also endorsing Gregson is world renowned environmentalist Dr Birute Galdikas; Dr. Galdikas is the leading researcher on the Orangutan and the deforestation of the jungles of Borneo.

Galdikas states, "It is what I have seen in Ian Gregson and his solid foundation in the Green Party that convinced me that Ian and the Green Party are the only political solutions to BC's environmental issues".

During his victory speech Mr. Gregson was pleased to announce the first donation to his campaign from his union brothers and sisters at CUPE - BC.

The Green Party of British Columbia has constantly polled at 18% since the 2001 election.
